Lelia and malcolm from Housmans. Interview and Video.

Who are you and what do you do?

Housmans Bookshop has been running for over 50 years and in that
period has supported numerous causes ranging from Stop the War in
Vietnam, Gay Liberation, Miners Strike, Anti-Globalisation and many
others. The Bookshop has always stocked publications produced by
either individuals or political groups which have been self-published.
In the punk era, we stocked numerous anarcho-punk inspired fanzines
and we have always supported small independent publishers and DIY
enthusiasts. Our website is www.housmans.com

Where are you based?

5 Caledonian Road, King’s Cross, London.

How did you get started in self publishing?

Over the years numerous people involved with, or friends of people who
work at, Housmans have published books mainly because no commercial
publisher was interested. Canary Press, which was run by Housmans
workers, produced the first book on the miners strike and followed it
up with half a dozen other titles. Imprints that have emerged from
Housmans staff include: Dark Star, Phoenix Press, Aim Publications,
Germinal Press, Violette Noziere and we have worked closely with Rebel
Press, Freedom Press, AK Press and PM Press.

What inspires your work?

We publish, and sell, books we feel have political significance but
which have no commercial potential so won’t get published or sold in
any other way.
